Wireless Penetration Test

Wireless Penetration Test (WiFi Pentest) involves the identification, assessment, and analysis of the connections of all devices connected to an organization’s wireless network. These devices may include laptops, tablets, smartphones, and IoT devices (e.g., cameras, sensors, smart appliances).

Packet inspection and analysis are performed using specialized equipment within and around the wireless network coverage area.

Objectives of WiFi Penetration Test

  1. Vulnerability Identification
    The first step is to identify the low-hanging fruit, meaning the most easily exploitable weaknesses. These include:

    • Weak WiFi passwords
    • Inadequate MAC filtering
    • Poor access control management on Access Points
  2. In-Depth Analysis
    After identifying the basic vulnerabilities, the test is extended to assess more complex exploits that require greater expertise or time to execute
  3. Risk Assessment
    Each identified vulnerability is evaluated based on the level of risk it poses to the organization, supporting the implementation of prioritized security measures.

Common Vulnerabilities & Risks

The most commonly identified vulnerabilities are related to Access Points and are usually caused by:

  • Inadequate access control
  • Absence or poor implementation of MAC filtering
  • Use of outdated security protocols (e.g., WEP)
  • Weak or shared passwords

If these vulnerabilities are not properly addressed, malicious actors can:

  • Gain unauthorized access to the network
  • Intercept sensitive data
  • Deploy malicious software
  • Gain a competitive advantage over the organization

The tools used by attackers include sniffers, spoofing, cracking, and various WiFi exploits that target weaknesses in Access Points and user devices
